Herman played college football at the University of Tennessee and 11 years of professional football with the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks. While at Tennessee, he had a punt of 71 yards and recorded the best hang-time ever of 5.7 seconds.

While playing in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, Herman was nick-named “Thunderfoot” by Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football. Herman was NFC Punter of the Year in 1975 and named “One of the Top 20 Punters of all Time” by Sporting News.

man is married to Suzy and they have 2 children. They reside in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
