Combating Bullying with Words That Heal
In many ways, the problems that young people face have remained the same for generations. Growing up has always been tough as kids try to figure out how to navigate their lives individually while also wanting to be accepted by their peers. The presence of people who bully others—physically or verbally—has always existed.
Nevertheless, young people today face a set of unique challenges that make growing up exponentially more difficult. Social media has created an environment where it’s nearly impossible to escape hurtful comments, comparisons, and criticisms. The phone, always present in the hands of most teenagers, can sometimes be a constant source of pain—reminding them repeatedly that they don’t “fit in” or aren’t “good enough.”
We sometimes try to minimize the impact of words, using phrases like “sticks and stones may break my bones…”—but the truth is, words do hurt. Proverbs 12:18 reminds us of this clearly: “The words of the reckless pierce like swords…” Reckless words, whether spoken in the school hallway or typed behind a screen, have the power to wound deeply. Sadly, many students today live under a barrage of verbal and emotional attacks, leaving them feeling isolated, anxious, and hopeless.
At Sports World, we believe in the power of encouragement, truth, and positive influence. We exist to come alongside young people during these formative years, using the platform of professional athletes to deliver a message of hope, identity, and purpose. Our speakers walk into gymnasiums and auditoriums across the country with one goal in mind: to speak life.
Thankfully, Proverbs 12 doesn’t end with a warning. It continues with a promise: “…but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Now, more than ever, this generation needs wise voices. They need encouragement. They need someone to say, “You matter. You are not alone. You are loved. You were created with purpose.”
Whether you’re a parent, teacher, coach, or student, you can be that voice. Speak truth. Share hope. Take time to lift someone up today—you never know how far a kind word can reach.
At Sports World, we believe that when students hear from someone who has walked through adversity and made better choices, it can change everything. One conversation can open the door to healing. One visit can begin a transformation.
Join us as we fight back against the lies and labels with truth, encouragement, and compassion. Let’s equip a generation to rise above the noise—and let them know that there is hope, there is healing, and there is a future worth fighting for.
